Copper Penny - Sitting On A Poor Man's Throne (45 edit)
Issued in Canada July 1973 on Sweet Plum 9914. Copper Penny hailed from Kitchener, Ontario. They started out in 1965 as the Penny Farthings, founded by Rich Wamil (keyboards, vocals) and Kenny Hollis (vocals), with Bill Mononen (guitar), Ron Hiller (bass) and Blake Barrett (drums). They signed with Columbia in 1968 for one single, and then with RCA in 1970 for an album and one single. It wasn't until they recorded for the London subsidiary Sweet Plum that they had success. They made their records in Detroit, to give them more of an authentic soul feel, with producer Harry V. Hinde and engineer Richard Becker bringing in Joyce Vincent and Telma Hopkins (Dawn) as backup vocalists. "Sitting On A Poor Man's Throne" was their second single on Sweet Plum. It entered the RPM 100 on July 30, 1973 at #95 and reached #14 on September 8th. Note that on the label, the time is listed as 4:20. Actually, it runs 3:33. There is a 4:20 edit of the LP version on the compilation "Super Jam" on the Much Records subsidiary Factory label. The complete LP version runs 5:10. Michael Jordan 1996 Playoffs: Gm 4: 45pts, Shaq/Penny Swept
Seeking revenge for his rusty loss the past year against this Orlando Magic team, MJ sought redemption in this series. With a monster Shaq entering his prime and a monster, young Penny having his finest year, MJ didn't just want to beat this duo - he wanted to annihilate them. Nothing short of a sweep was acceptable and that's precisely what happened. In this game, MJ procured the sweep with yet another astonishing performance. Opening by hitting his first 7 shots, he finished with one of his 'super-zone' perfomances with 16-23 shooting for 70%. Again, on call, he produced a brilliant, efficient game to neutralize the combined 56 points scored by Shaq and Penny. Perhaps Shaq went to LA the next year because he had enough of MJ in the east.
